Parents and guardians are key to student achievement, which is why the White House recently recognized the importance of parental involvement by honoring 12 parents as “Champions of Change,” during a recent “PTA Day” at the White House. Over 175 PTA leaders from across the country met with senior officials from the White House and Department of Education to discuss the importance of family engagement.

Melissa Kicklighter is being honored as a Champion of Change for her time and effort in supporting parent involvement in our children's education.
"As a school based PTA leader, my focus was on caring for the students and faculty of our school by building a strong membership and community business partnerships and offering quality programs and services. The first step in accomplishing this was to build a strong team of dedicated board members who were willing to learn with me and get the job done. Through the efforts of this team of dedicated PTA leaders and generous volunteers, we were able to enhance our traditional school programs with increased family and community participation and offer innovative programs and activities each year. Partnering with our teachers to provide educational and fun family night activities and the addition of the BUDs (Brothers, Uncles, Dads, etc) Club, which was created to increase male involvement, were a few of many programs that we created and implemented with pride. "
Most recently, as the Duval County Council President and a State Board member, our theme was simply “Helping Hands – Embracing Hearts – Taking Action”. ......."Leading such a dynamic group of people who were willing to devote the time necessary to build strong school based PTA leaders through training and parent education has been my privilege. From the everyday work in our schools and around our community through relationships with so many organizations coalitions and task forces to being awarded and entrusted to carry out the pivotal work of the National PTA Common Core State Standards Initiative and Grassroots Advocacy grant, the State and National award winning Superintendent’s Leadership Academy for our high school students to learn how to be true advocates for themselves and others, and so much more; we have enhanced our community leadership capacity and are recognized as having an important voice for children’s health, education and welfare.
PTA is one of the largest and oldest volunteer based child advocacy organizations in our country. We are passionate, persistent and powerful because we are fighting to protect and care for our nation’s most precious resource." ................................
"
I grew up in a family that was willing the help others with their needs before our own needs. Now my wife, 11 children and 28+ grandchildren are doing the same. Don’t wait for someone to bring the change or help someone in need, you do it and you will receive the blessing of giving of yourself."

"The work of local PTAs is more critical than ever. While teachers and school administrators are focused on work inside the classroom (due to more rigorous curriculum standards and increased focus on teacher accountability and student achievement), PTAs have to be more involved and instrumental in taking care of educational components outside of the classroom, in order to provide a more balanced approach to our children’s education. Playground improvements, healthy school lunch initiatives, technology upgrades and enhancements, bullying awareness, Internet safety, environmental consciousness and enrichment activities are all areas where PTAs and their members can be instrumental in leading meaningful change. Funding used to be available to schools for these initiatives. Resources for schools are now being allocated differently leaving these important areas under-funded or unfunded altogether. To help address this shortfall in funding, PTAs need more volunteer involvement and they need to fundraise more than ever."
My approach to serving as Vice President of our PTA is simple. Welcome,
encourage and engage new parents to become active in our school and use their expertise to strengthen activities and programs. Listen to the parents to find their opinions and seek win-win outcomes. Be accessible, transparent and remember that kindness matters. Encourage “Out of the Box” thinking and consider new ideas, even (and sometimes especially) if they sound a little crazy. Most important: the children are the focus of everything we do and every decision we make.
My mantra, “Stay positive and move forward!”
White House Honors Parents as Champions of Change
In a recent speech, Secretary Duncan noted that parents understand better than anyone how important it is that schools prepare students for success in life—not just with academic knowledge, but with the skills needed to succeed in jobs and to be an active participant in society.Parents and guardians are key to student achievement, which is why the White House recently recognized the importance of parental involvement by honoring 12 parents as “Champions of Change,” during a recent “PTA Day” at the White House. Over 175 PTA leaders from across the country met with senior officials from the White House and Department of Education to discuss the importance of family engagement.
