Colourful welcome

Separation blues: Many children in schools in Ernakulam district on Wednesday could not hold back their tears for being away from their parents.

KOCHI: Thousands of children entered the world of letters on day one of the new academic year in schools in the city and rest of the district on Wednesday. ‘Praveshnotsavam' — the reception accorded to them on school reopening — marked the day after two months of summer vacation. Flowers, festoon and balloons offered a colourful welcome to the children.
They also got an opportunity to flaunt their new umbrellas and raincoats, as heavy rains lashed the city. For many, the first day in school evoked a mixed response. While several children were seen in a joyful mood, there were a lot of others who could not hold back their tears for being away from the comfort of their homes.
Government Higher Secondary School at Poothrika was the official venue for the district-level inauguration of Praveshnotsavam. Eldhose Kunnappally, Ernakulam district panchayat president, inaugurated the programme.
Anila George, Deputy Director of Education, Ernakulam, said that ‘Praveshnotsavam' was also held at the educational sub-district level in the district. The day also witnessed the launch of various activities in connection with the International year of Chemistry and World Forest Day. Children watched an interesting experiment related to chemistry held at Government Higher Secondary School, Poothrika.
Fifty students planted a sapling each on the school premises. They have been entrusted the responsibility of nurturing it until they leave the school campus after completing their Plus Two course. Students also got a chance to display their Taekwondo skills on day one of the academic year. Ms. George said that the enrolment rate in government, aided, and unaided schools in Ernakulam district will be ascertained on the sixth working day of the new academic year. The actual student strength will be announced after the one day verification to be held on various schools, she said.

KANNUR: The monsoon drizzle reported in many parts of the district notwithstanding, a festive atmosphere marked school reopening day on Wednesday.
Arrangements were made in schools to hold ‘Pravesanotsavam' to greet the Class I students. Teachers and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) welcomed the children. The district-level inauguration of the school reopening fete was held at Government Upper Primary School, Thadikkadavu, here. Cultural programmes were held in many schools.
Education Department officials here said the Pravesanotsavam was held in 1,123 schools in the district where students were admitted to Class I.
Deputy Director of Education P.K. Ayyappan said the final figure of the number of students admitted to Class I in this academic year would become available next week. Nearly 25,000 students were admitted to Class I in the schools here last year, he said, adding the number was expected to be similar this year.
Teachers' initiatives
Teachers took initiatives to ensure that there was no fall in the number of students joining Class I in their respective schools lest the institutions be branded ‘uneconomic.'
The teachers were also concerned about the drop in enrolment in government, aided and unaided schools over the years. The declining enrolment rate in the past was attributed to the mushrooming of schools with Central Board of Secondary Education syllabus.
The Education Department officials here said improvement in the education facilities in government, aided, and unaided schools had prompted more parents to opt for these schools for their children.
Many unaided schools offered various facilities, including school buses, to attract more students, and check the fall in enrolment.
